Ulfenwatch 1

Upon its release, Warhammer Quest Cursed City was of immediate appeal, being a self-contained box game packed with an awesome number of wonderful miniatures.

“What a fantastic project…,” I thought.

A couple of years later, having sourced a copy of Cursed City via Ebay and missed out on the first expansion pack, I’ve got around to a test piece before diving into the set-proper (luckily I managed to get hold of some more Ulfenwatch via Ebay, too).

An excellent miniature (the empty spaces and pose really elevate the undead feel) that was fun to paint, if somewhat of a challange for my aged eyes… Painting contemporary GW plastic miniatures involves re-calibrating ones approach to painting to an extent, and only now am I starting to understand how and why.

Looking forward to completing some more miniatures and eventually playing the games itself!

Rather than the basing shown here, the set-proper will use the lovely ‘battle ready’ temple bases from Gamers Grass.

Medieval Halberdiers and Archers

Another blast from the past appeared in my Instagram feed courtesy of Wargames Foundry; some medieval halberdiers I painted back in around 2000/ 2001.

These reminded me of a Foundry post some time ago, featuring some medieval archers I painted around the same time.

Classic Perry twins sculpts, with Middle-Hammer era painting.

Ultramarine Primaris Intercessor

Finally got around to trying my hand on a contemporary GW plastic miniature and although it was fun to paint it was more challenging than expected.

Marines are all about smooth, clean blends and sharp edge highlights, so my deficiency in both shows… I also kept too close to the base colour (Macragge Blue) resulting in a darker tone than is usual for Ultramarines.

A lot learnt and will be practising on a few more before trying something a little more special.

Wounded Viking Vignette

Although I’ve been slowly working away at a fantasy miniature recently, the Viking call proved too strong to resist, resulting in a quick but fun paint job on this rather cute wounded Viking vignette.

With no point value under the Saga rules, this miniature is purely cosmetic and intended to add a little character to my warband.

Viking Warlord with Banner Bearer

After a couple of years’ intermittent painting and the completion of this Viking warlord with banner bearer, I’m now the proud owner of a fully painted 5 point Viking warband for Saga.

Nothing special for many gamers/ collectors, but something of a personal achievement.

Always liked this hulking Viking miniature since I painted it for the Foundry website over 20 years ago! Fun to revisit and take a subtler approach, although at the last yard I did a less than sterling job of the face and hair.

Although initially unsure, I like the way the warlord and banner bearer strike a similar pose along the same angle, creating a pleasing (if rather tight) profile no matter where viewed from.

Shield and banner transfers from Little Big Men Studios, rocky outcrop made from cork board hackied and chipped with a modelling knife.

I’ll get around to posting some photos of the entire warband some time soon, hopefully taken on some proper terrain.

Although I intend to add some more units, I’ll take a break from Vikings for a while to scratch a nagging fantasy/ 40K itch and finish off the initial 5 points of Anglo-Saxons that Section Nine Studios painted for me.
